This intervention addressed the issue of advertisement, specifically the marketing tactics used to promote self-identification with commodities. Each poster displays a single quote from an economist or social theorist whose writings discuss advertising, the economy, and the relationships we form with material possessions. There is an interaction between what is being sold and the reality of our relationships with consumerism.
While subversive design can be produced in professional environments, by skilled people with access to ample resources, it can also be created by individuals with access to very little. By keeping it simple, and strategically choosing locations, the artist is still creating a dialogue but with simple, accessible materials. Exploiting an existing infrastructure is key since it allows messages to be communicated to a great deal of people, by one person with limited access to resources.
